Maria Luigia Gioffre
Maria Luigia Gioffre is a transdisciplinary artist integrating visual art, theatre, performance, writing and curatorship. Her work draws on anthropologies, mythologies and uncertain futures which she reframes in non-ideological narratives by expanding and eroding historical references through the creation of performative sets and personal imaginaries mainly formalised through live arts. Maria’s work has been part of exhibitions, residencies, prizes and publications, and recently presented, among others, at Biennale di Venezia, Teatro 2023, Santarcangelo Festival and Primavera dei Teatri. She is the founder and co-director of In-ruins, a platform devoted to exploring entanglements between cultural heritage and contemporary art across archaeological sites in southern Italy.

Maria is interested in the hidden, haunted, unspoken, liminal and fragile legacy left silenced by the proclaimed and established colonial heritage. As an artist from southern Italy myself, they experienced a colonial archaeological landscape all around the coast where they were born in Calabria. By working through performative practices, the artist looks at bodies as archaeological landscapes of concealed memories of non-hegemonic heritage and sometimes never heard stories. As an artist who merges curatorial practices connected to archaeological research and performative practices, Maria considers CDCD a unique occasion to make converging these two sides of my research, in a way that can allow me to work, reflect and produce on site without risks of extractivism.
The digital reflection titled Waiting Wars Chapter II, created by Maria Luigia Gioffrè, resonates with and responds to the experiences gained during her one-month residency at H401 + Creative Court in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It not only reflects on the residency itself but also extends into the post-production phase, exploring the ongoing processes and transformations that follow the residency experience.
