Sumer Erek

Sümer Erek is a multidisciplinary artist born in Cyprus, who currently lives and works between the UK and Cyprus. After starting his studies at Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul, he moved to London, where he completed his Bachelor’s degree and postgraduate studies in Sculpture at Central St. Martins, and later received his Master’s in Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TRAIN) at University of the Arts London. Erek’s art practice is informed by his lived experience of displacement, trauma and a longing for new futures. His work includes paintings, installations, performances and participatory practices, often conducted in public spaces. He has exhibited his work internationally, including at biennials, exhibitions and site-specific interventions.–

Participating in CDCD is important to him as it provides a unique opportunity to work in various countries, and collaborate and learn from a diverse group of artists. This experience will enable him to delve into and reflect upon the profound impact of colonialism on my personal history and identity.

By engaging with different perspectives and cultural contexts, Sumer aims to create a work that not only addresses their experiences but also resonates with broader themes of displacement and resilience. CDCD will be instrumental in enriching their practice and fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of our global narratives.

The digital reflection titled Fragments, created by Sümer Erek, resonates with and responds to the experiences gained during his one-month residency at Nova Gorica, hosted by BJCEM, ŠKUC Association and GO2025! Nova Gorica-Gorizia, European Capital of Culture, Slovenia. It not only reflects on the residency itself but also extends into the post-production phase, exploring the ongoing processes and transformations that follow the residency experience.
