Rafael Guendelman Hales

Rafael Guendelman Hales is a visual artist and documentary filmmaker, who graduated in Art from the Universidad Católica and has a Master’s in Situated Practice from University College London. In his work he has worked on the dynamic relationship between human beings and their environment, generating questions and drifts mainly from the audiovisual language, installation and drawing. He has exhibited his work in different spaces, including the Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende, Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos, Parque Cultural de Valparaíso, Palais de Tokyo in France and Centro Cultural Khalil Sakakini in Palestine.

Rafael finds it very interesting and challenging to participate in the CDCD residency. It is a unique opportunity to develop a long-term artistic research, together with different institutions and artists from different countries. Coming from Chile, to engage in these dialogues in an extended format is very stimulating. He also finds the idea of producing work from interaction with specific communities, archives and heritage collections attractive.

In particular, Rafael will work from the archives and collections of the Museo della Civiltà Romana to address the relationship that exists between the idea of civilization and the representations of it present in the museum. This relationship, in the case of his route, will be most strong between Roman culture and Mediterranean culture, in particular in relation to the Arab world and Tunisian society. He is interested in further investigating the contested narratives in the Mediterranean, where he has worked in before.
