Dorottya Marton

Dorottya graduated from the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest in documentary film directing. Her films have been screened at MakeDox International Film Festival, BEAST IFF, Zsigmond Vilmos Film Festival (ZSIFF), The National Independent Film Festival (MAFSZ), and Friss Hús International Short Film Festival among others.

Dorottya’s work is on the border between documentary and experimental film. She shoots and often sits in front of the camera herself, frequently using abstract or mixed media images in her work that deal with deeply personal themes. Dorottya also works as a freelance photographer and video journalist/videographer for Telex and otherindependent media.

Taking part in the program gives her an opportunity to further her practice of working with objects and autobiographies while allowing her to place it in a collective setting by working with local communities. She is very interested in how colonial modes of thinking have shaped our view on sacred/authentic items, how we engage with them and the narratives surrounding these objects. What is our personal connection to them? How do they tell the stories of the communities that they are supposed to be part of? Is it possible to create our own sacred objects in contrast to the institutional ones in museums?

During the project, Dorottya wants to place a focus on women, queer and non-monogamous family stories and histories, given that colonialism has oftentimes impacted these communities.

The digital reflection titled Where do we go when we die?, created by Dorottya Márton, resonates with and responds to the experiences gained during her one-month residency at Casa Arabe, Spain. It not only reflects on the residency itself but also extends into the post-production phase, exploring the ongoing processes and transformations that follow the residency experience.
